Rogue

On our way home from Omaha, we stopped in Fort Worth to pick up a very special little girl. We got a puppy through Brittany Rescue in Texas (BRIT). I was very excited to get our little girl. A man had dropped off three Brittany puppies to a shelter in Fort Worth. They hadn't had their shots. Brittany Rescue in Texas took the three puppies in, but not before they had been exposed to some dangerous diseases. Rogue's brother and sister both developed distemper. Fortunately, Rogue remained healthy. Rogue was first named "Pumpkin." Her sister is "Sweet Pea," and her brother is Gus.

Rogue was the first of the trio to be adopted, as she was healthy. Gus was adopted in November, and last I heard Sweet Pea was scheduled to be adopted in January. The foster parents gave these pups a lot of TLC to get them healthy and to their forever homes.

Rogue was named after the character from X-Men. Her full name is Empress Rogue of the Pumpkin Patch. The name incorporates her puppy name. Also, my parents call Michael the Emperor, so Rogue's title matches that.

She may be the same breed and coloring as my sweet Diamond, but she has a totally different personality. Diamond was always on the calm side for a Brittany. Rogue is more of a typical Brittany. Rogue is very leggy, and she looks like she'll be bigger than Di. Right now, Rogue is weighing in at just over 20 lbs. She's almost six months. She loves her daily walks, "playing" with the kittehs, and cuddling with me. She also likes being around Michael, especially when he is dropping food.

Rogue is a good dog, and she'll be even better once we go through some obedience training. We've just signed up for beginning classes starting in mid-February. She already knows "sit" but "come" has been more challenging for her.

Rogue gets "puppy crazies" everyday:

Halloween Surprise

The last time I got a BIG surprise was several Christmases ago. Along with the other presents, David gave me a Wii controller. He said it was a "promise" that I would get a Wii in the future. I had already gotten a breadmaker, and my birthday is a month after Christmas. So, David's "promise" was plausible. Well, after we had opened presents, we were getting ready to go to the Woodlands to see David's family. He said he was going to get their presents organized. He came out to the living room saying something like, "Krissy, who is this present for?" I look at him, and he's holding the Wii box. Surprise!

I don't have the opportunity to surprise someone like that very often. But, we did it over Halloween! David and I had been talking about visiting Omaha in the fall. We started joking that we would just show up at my parents and laughing at what their reaction would be. We decided to go up to Omaha for Halloween, and we decided to keep quiet about it. Total surprise!

Michael, David, and I arrived in Omaha on October 30. We had left college station very early that morning, so we arrived in Omaha in the early evening. Nebraska football was on; once we hit Nebraska, we were able to pick it up on the radio. We didn't even know if my parents would be home! We figured if they weren't home, they'd be watching the game somewhere...and I knew the "usual spot" where they would watch.

We arrived at my parents and knocked at the door. Rang the bell. No answer. We knew they were home because the dogs were in the backyard. Michael was even knocking at the door. Too cute! I went over to the garage and opened it. Their cars were in the garage. Quickly closed the garage door. Went back to the front door and knocked again. Still no answer. David and I were cracking up. We probably looked so goofy! My parents couldn't hear the door because they were in the basement watching the game.

My dad came to the bottom of the stairs and acted VERY surprised and amazed to see us. He told my mom to come see. And, she was shocked to see us! Ron and Jean were watching the game with my parents, so we also got to see them. My folks were happy to see us, and I think David and I pulled off the surprise visit.

We decided that we would surprise some more members of my family the next day--Halloween. After church, we put Michael in his dragon costume and visited my Grandpa V. We joked later that he didn't seem surprised at all to see us. He just takes things in stride.

A little later, when it was closer to trick-or-treating time, we got dressed up. Michael was a dragon, I was a princess, and David was a sorcerer. I was wearing a blond wig, so I was a little less recognizable. We went to my grandma and grandpa Knightly's house. David and I took Michael to the door. (My parents lagged behind a bit as not to spoil the surprise.) We rang the bell and stood behind Michael. My grandpa came to the door with candy and smiling at Michael. But, it didn't click just yet that it was us. But, he was looking like he thought we looked familiar. My grandma was behind him. She looked at Michael. She looked a little puzzled. Then she looked at David. Finally, she looked at me. She inched closer, looking very sure that I was familiar. She said she knew it was us when I started laughing. We also went to my aunt's and some close friends. All were surprised. My grandma's reaction was the best. It's not everyday that you can surprise someone like that!

I was happy to see my family, and I think everyone was thrilled to see Michael. He rearranged some kitchens. Nobody in Nebraska knows where to put there tupperware! Michael fixed that situation. I got my Runza and my Jam's coconut chicken salad. David got his Noodles. We had a nice visit. The visits are always too short.

The cutest Dragon!

Would you recognize us?!

Inflation

My mom says that when when a member of the family finds a dime, it's a reminder of Kritik.

Shortly after Diamond died, we took Michael for a walk at a local park. As we were walking, David found a $20 bill. Later, I found a $5 bill. My mom said that it was a sign of Diamond. (Inflation, I guess!)

Remembering Diamond...

As I was putting out the Christmas decorations, I brought out the stockings. David, Michael, and I each have one, as do the pets. "My puppy" stocking had a picture of Diamond hanging out in the snow. Diamond was so funny about snow. She usually liked to play in it, but she had "sensitive pads." Her paws got cold in the snow. She didn't see much snow in her retirement here in Texas.

Diamond died at the end of September. She was 17 and a great dog to the end. My got Diamond the summer after my freshman year of high school. Needless to say, we had been through a lot together, and we had a lot of adventures. Diamond saw me through high school, college, first job, first apartment, fish, moving to Texas, cats, marriage, and a baby. She may have been my dad's hunting dog, but she was my girl. She taught me a lot about responsibility and being a parent. I miss that Brit so much.

This year has certainly had its ups and downs.

David's father died on September 18. He died at home. Tina, Kristen, David and I were with him in his final moments here on earth.

I only knew Mike after he was diagnosed with ALS. One thing that is quite certain was how much he loved his family. David, of course, has so many wonderful and funny stories about growing up. David's cousins had stories about playing with Uncle Mike.

Mike was also very excited about his first grandchild, so much so that he couldn't keep the news to himself. He had told David's sister before we even got a chance to talk to her!

His obituary is still online: http://obits.dignitymemorial.com/dignity-memorial/obituary.aspx?n=Michael-Coleman&lc=4035&pid=145509869&mid=4383223

David also wrote a nice story about how his dad and he shared a love of sports:

I know we'll be missing Mike this Christmas.
